Haedong Yonggungsa (Temple) in Busan, where the sun first rises.

Haedong Yonggungsa Temple in Busan is a great place to see the beautiful sunrise over the sea.

The sunrise at Haedong Yonggungsa Temple in Busan, where the sun rises is very wonderful, and the sunrise seen against the background of the unique rock formations and the Busan sea is exceptionally special.

Haedong Yonggungsa was founded in 1376 by 'Naongdaesa', who was a royal priest to King Gongmin(공민왕: 恭民王) of the Goryeo Dynasty, and is one of the three great avalokitesvara sacred sites in Korea.

It is said to be a mysterious place where the sea, dragon, and Guanyin Buddha are harmonized and contain a deeper faith than anywhere else.

Haedong Yonggungsa Temple has a long history and a large scale, and has as many structures as its fame.

Gulbeopdang(굴법당) next to Daeungjeon Hall(대웅전) is called Maitreya Hall(미륵전), and has been enshrining the Maitreya seated stone Buddha since its foundation. It is said that if a person without descendants prays, he will have a baby boy, so it is called Deuknambul(득남불).

For a single stone, there is Korea's largest stone statue, the 10-meter-tall Seawater Avalokiteshvara Buddha, and the Yaksa Nyorai Buddha, also known as the East Sea Gatbawi Buddha.

There is a three-story stone pagoda with four lions in front of Daeungjeon(대웅전).

Originally, there was a 3m high rock - Mireukbawi(미륵바위) - at this site, but the temple was in ruins during the Japanese invasion of Korea in 1592 and was destroyed due to the construction of a coast guard network during the Korean War. In 1990, Jeong-am collected the rocks and supplemented the damaged rock wall to build this stone pagoda and enshrined the 7 buddhasaris brought from Sri Lanka.

Haedong Yonggungsa Temple is also famous for being the site of Yeouiju.

In 1974, Venerable Jeongam (晸菴) became the abbot of this temple and prayed to restore it to Avalokitesvara. The temple was renamed Haedong Yonggungsa, after that. It seems that Yeouiju has a meaning because it is the temple where the dragon ascended to heaven.

Haedong Yonggungsa, built on top of rocks, has a unique structure because it is not a temple built on flat ground.

The beauty that comes from the atypical and non-linear structure also seems to contribute to the reputation of Haedong Yonggungsa Temple.

Haedong Yonggungsa is famous for its historical significance and miracles.

The temples and structures are beautiful, and the sight of them harmonizing with the sea and rocks in Busan is also spectacular.

It is a recommended sunrise destination or just a place to see the sunrise.
